…at least when it comes to the world of sports performance for elite athletes, and those who aspire to become elite athletes. As we scroll through social media posts, there is a preponderance of athletic training, weight lifting and exercise instruction training videos. It is always amazing to me that, even at the highest levels of athletic training, discussions about nutrition and supplementation are rarely presented. One would think that, as an industry and profession, we would have progressed much further by this point in time. However, it actually appears that, with the proliferation of social media in society, there is actually a premium being placed on outer appearance and a corresponding lagging regard for the life sustaining or natural performance enhancing processes that are actually taking place on the inside of our bodies; after all, everyone knows that we need to show our wares in order to impress others.

There is a saying that proper nutrition and the right supplementation can make a good athlete great and a great athlete better. In the world of elite and professional sports, where hundredths of a second matter and can make the difference between winning or losing, being drafted or undrafted, being a starter or running with the 2’s, it’s not a far reach to think that every elite athlete, and every athlete who aspires to be elite, would give themselves every possible opportunity to perform at their absolute best.

Here’s the bottom line, there are two metabolic states “catabolic” and “anabolic”. “Catabolic” refers to the metabolic processes in the body where substances are being broken down, “Anabolic” refers to those metabolic processes where substances are being built up.

A while back, we asked a group of college athletes to complete this sentence, “Weightlifting does what…..?” The resounding answer in the room was “builds muscle”. Nothing could be further from the truth. All of the training an athlete does in the weight room and all of the exercise an athlete does on the field (running, jumping, etc.,) represents “catabolic” activity or the breaking down of muscle fiber and metabolic structures. The “anabolic” stage of tissue repair and thus, the building up of muscle is done ONLY during recovery and ONLY through the utilization of the nutritional products (food and supplements) we put in our body. The less you put of the right amounts of micro and macro nutrients into your body, the less-than-optimal result you will get from your workouts. Period! End of story!!

So all of you youth and high school athletes, who are out there every day busting your butts in the weight room and on the field, who are ignoring what you put in your body are, by definition, are becoming less of the athlete you could optimally become. So, in short, what an athlete puts in his/ her body, that is readily available for tissues and cells to use in rebuilding the damage that strength and exercise training do, will be the final determinant of what an athlete will ultimately be able to achieve.

Truth: Less than optimal nutrition will yield less than optimal results.
